Rock Hill Park Playground

Rock Hill Park, located in the York neighborhood of Bellingham was designated for the 2024 playground improvement cycle. The new playground was to be located in a shady lawn area of the small park, ringed by trees. A steep slope was located on one side of the play area, and a WSDOT easement on the other side. The playground design had to be carefully sited to reduce impacts to existing trees, and reduce impacts from shallow bedrock that could have been expensive to remove. Playground drainage utilized a lower lawn area for infiltration, reducing expensive in-ground drainage components. The playground components were arranged for functionally linked use zones, reducing overall size and cost of surfacing. ADA access was created from the park entry point to the play area ramp, skirting carefully behind the steep slope setback. The built playground has a feeling of having been there for a long time, ringed with trees and shade, and framing the Rock, the high point of the park. A new bench and drinking fountain are going to be well used features.
