Bloedel Donovan Park Playground

Bloedel Donovan Park Playground Upgrade was a part of the 2024 Playgrounds project. This highly used park play structure was due for replacement. Half of the playground was within the shoreline setback so the design team reviewed the project with the shoreline planners and we were able to make the structure replacement without a time consuming and expensive shoreline permit by staying within the existing envelope. This also prevented damage to many large trees surrounding the play space. The first round of community input was taken to playground vendors, two of which produced concepts for selection by the community. The winning proposal was packed with play value for ages 2-12. It is easy to spend 2 hours at this playground with a child, there is so much to do. Adjacent to this playground, is plenty of nature play with native plants, huge trees, sand, and water. The new structure is incredibly accessible, with ramping up to the main high platform by using a takeoff point above the existing retaining wall. The several challenges arose during construction, and PLA worked with the project manager and vendor to correct the issues and move forward, with minimal extra cost to the City.
