2023 AIA NWW Honor Award, National Association of Housing and Redevelopment (NAHRO) Award of Merit, and Best in Multifamily Design, Habitat for Humanity International, 2024 - The Samish Commons project provides low income housing and a private elevated park between three Whatcom Co/Bellingham Housing Authority multi-family buildings. PLA was challenged to develop a roof-top landscape design that meets Bellingham Green Factor, provides play features for all ages, and creates spaces for neighbors to meet and converse. At-grade landscape provides lush, yet drought tolerant plantings in line with the neighborhood design guidelines and public works roadway guidelines. The project is located in a recently up-zoned area, and helps to set the tone for the more dense future of the neighborhood. The project was completed in phases over several years, adding complexity to design and construction.
